I actually chose to go natural by accident. I was badly burned in 2010 by a really bad relaxer and decided to stop altogether. I started wearing weaves until my hair grew back, and have kept my natural hair ever since then. For a while I have been on a hair journey, not necessarily for natural hair, but because I wanted to be able to care for my hair myself and not rely on hairdressers.
So first my research involved learning how to style my hair when I was having a break from the weave, and how to maintain my hair when I had my weave in…Learning how to style my hair helped me a lot because, to be honest, I was getting sick of weaves and the money spent in doing and maintaining it. I had mastered the styles that I wanted, but because my hair was out periodically it was exposed to the weather and other environmental factors and also because I did not take care of it as much when I put it in those styles which made it break off slightly which was far from ideal.
Eventually, it led me to transition into understanding how to maintain my natural hair when it was out. I found that there was a lot of things on natural hair, products and moisture and protein balances, but to me all the information was a bit confusing. It never really told me why to use it or the benefits, just that it made my hair soft. I’m very frugal with money, so I wanted a better understanding of what the benefits were before I went out and bought products, and how it actually affected my hair. I know it sounds silly, but knowing the analytics puts my mind at ease!
Then I found my holy grail! Through research, I came across this book that helped explain in detail everything I was looking for in terms of understanding and maintaining black hair.
The Science of Black hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy
Let me tell you, this book is GOLD! Using science, research, and testimonies, the author has a very thorough perspective on hair and hair care. She talks about the science of hair from roots to tip, hair chemistry, the scalp, strategies for breakage correction and defence, hair structure, function and characteristics, understanding of hair growth, tips on hair product selection, the science of protein and moisture balance, as well as provides a regimen starter guide, and healthy dietary advice for growing healthy hair! Literally everything! Trust me, this book is the real deal! 🔥. It was so insightful that I finished this book in 2 weeks!
I went to work starting to building my regimen, understanding my hair, and using all the tips and tricks to maintain my hair. Once I understood the science, my hair started to thrive! I made a promise to myself that I would check my progress after a year and look at the growth results!
I can honestly say that without a doubt this book SAVED MY HAIR! I acquired key knowledge to learn about how to manage and maintain my hair for it to flourish! The length, the thickness, the strength, the shine, the look have all changed dramatically! I am continuing with my new found regime, and I can honestly say my hair is getting better and better! This book doesn’t just focus on natural hair either, it is an all-rounded book, so whether you have natural, fine straightened, relaxed, texturised, coloured, permed, or are dealing with children’s hair it is definitely a good read. I would definitely recommend this book 1000%!
I am still on the road to maintaining my healthy hair, and so far I am loving the progress!! I will keep you posted on how the journey is going in future posts! 😉
